Rafael Reviews a Slovenian Classic, ‘Martin Krpan’

Translations of children’s literature from Eastern Europe are, unfortunately, rare. To get a copy of Martin Krpan, written by Fran Levstik (1831-1887) and translated by Maja Visenjak Limon and David Limon, you might need to travel to Slovenia:

But this book, published by Ljublana-based Mladinska knjiga, is worth a bit of trouble, both for Levstik’s story and the powerful, muscular illustrations by Tone Kralj, party-way between “workers of the world unite” and lush European-royal tapestry.
