Scandinavia is not only a hotbed of terrific noir but also heartfelt middle-grade stories.
By Brigita Orel
Astrid Lindgren paved the way for Scandinavian children’s authors, but she now has several worthy successors. I’ve been following the Nordic children’s book market for a while, and I’m always excited when a new book for children is published. Scandinavian children’s novels tend to be quirky, fun (and funny), and heartfelt. The authors are not afraid to touch upon difficult subjects but they do so subtly and skillfully.
Here is a list of my favourite middle-grade novels from Norway and Sweden.
Our Own Little Paradise

Written and illustrated by Marianne Kaurin
Translated from Norwegian by Olivia Lasky

Nora has no plans for the summer but when everyone else in her class talks about going to exotic summer destinations, she lies. Her lie gets out of control when it starts spreading on social media. On top of that, her new classmate just moved into her neighbourhood so he could easily discover that she was lying. But instead of ratting her out, he becomes her ally.
This charming novel may seem like a low-stakes story at a first glance, but in truth it is a gorgeous and subtle read about how even the most boring prospects can turn into exciting new opportunities, and how it takes very little to find joy, friendship and even first love if you know where to look.
Adventures with Waffles

Written by Maria Parr
Illustrated by Kate Forrester
Translated from Norwegian by Guy Puzey
Published by Candlewick Press, 2018 (and in the UK as Waffle Hearts by Walker Books)

Trille and Lena lead a very adventurous life in Mathildewick Cove. They’re constantly getting into sticky and funny situations, until Lena has to move away and Trille’s grandma dies. All of a sudden life in the small bay looks completely different. But waffles and loving family relations and friendships help Trille heal, just as the humorous undertones help readers find hope despite the heavy topics the author explores.
A thoroughly enjoyable novel from one of the best modern Norwegian children’s authors. The quirky characters and vivid scenes make one want to move to Mathildewick Cove.
The Glass Children

Written and illustrated by Kristina Ohlsson
Translated from Swedish by Marlaine Delargy
Published by Penguin, 2014

Billie has to move to a dilapidated old house with musty furniture in a small town. The previous owners have left behind two small glass figures of a boy and a girl. As the figures begin to move when no one is home, Billie starts to suspect that the house is haunted. Billie and her new friend Aladdin are determined to uncover the secrets the old house is hiding.
A suspenseful read with spooky supernatural elements, this is the first story in a three-book series.
King Bro!

Marcus normally lives in Stockholm, Sweden, where everyone knows that he now wants to be called Marcus instead of Michelle. But this summer he goes with his mom to Malmö, where no one knows his story and he can truly be himself. He meets Mikkel, who is into skateboarding, just like Marcus, and they instantly connect and become blood brothers. But then his new friend thinks Marcus has been lying, even though he has never been more honest in his life.
