It’s the 10th year of World Kid Lit: an international reading project with a global impact! As we approach World Kid Lit Month this September – our 10th anniversary – we are fundraising to keep the World Kid Lit ship sailing into the next decade, and for two projects aimed at promoting international reading among young people.

What is World Kid Lit?

Most of you have already been reading and supporting World Kid Lit for a long time – thank you! But many readers will be new to our site and our community, so we’d love to share with you the various ways in which we celebrate and promote world literature for young people, and invite you to donate to our first ever crowdfunding drive.

Our core mission here at World Kid Lit is to support young people’s awareness of and access to diverse, inclusive, global literature, both literature in translation and English-language texts and authors from every continent of the world.

We do this all year round by providing free resources, book reviews, creator interviews and recommended book lists on our website and on social media, with an extra special splurge every September, for World Kid Lit Month!

As a registered community interest company, we have annual overheads including our statutory reporting and accounts, insurance and other administrative expenses.

World Kid Lit in Schools – fundraising goal £1000/$1300

The second strand of our mission is to support the education and library sectors to enable greater access for young people to global literature, and to positive experiences of translation, language learning and multilingual creativity.

Besides our free online resources, we also bring World Kid Lit into schools, distributing free global literature book bundles, and hosting inspiring talks and assemblies (in school in the UK and online anywhere), and creative translation workshops, together with the Stephen Spender Trust.

Exploring languages from beyond the curriculum, these school events help young people value their home and heritage languages, and see language learning as a creative superpower. The workshops take pupils through the translation process from codebreaking to creative writing, showing how books travel and how we can travel by book.

Schools’ International Reading Award – fundraising goal £1000/$1300

We’re very excited about our new project bringing inclusive, international books into schools and libraries. A drum roll please …. for our Schools’ International Reading Award!

Now entering its second year, this Award rewards creative projects in schools that promote international reading for pleasure. It’s open to schools anywhere in the world (where English is one of the teaching languages of the school) and last year the winning schools were in the UK, USA and the Netherlands. The prizes for the three winning schools (one for each age category) are international book bundles, generously donated by our publisher sponsors.

The costs of running this Award include printing costs for posters and certificates, an honorarium for the judges and administrator, and postage for the book bundles.
